Increase Curb Appeal on the Cheap

Author J. K. Rowling says “A good first impression can work wonders.” Robert Cheese, athlete and motivational speaker is fond of saying "Go out of your way to make an outstanding first impression.” When you are trying to sell your home, you want to work wonders with the curbside appeal of your home, because if it looks outstanding when the potential buyers pull up, your chances of making a sale just went way up.
That said, it can be daunting to come up with ways to give your home that special something, especially if you are on a limited budget. There are, however, some cheap and easy fixes to make the exterior of your home more eye-catching, all for under $200!

You already know you have to clean, clean, clean your house to have prospective buyers in, you’re well aware they will be looking it over with a critical eye from baseboard to crown molding. Many people though, fail to make the outside of the house sparkle. An easy way to accomplish this is by having your house pressure washed. You can even rent a pressure washer and do it yourself! This can not only brighten up your exterior and make your house look newer, it can also make your driveway look better too. You probably don’t notice that your driveway has gotten dingy and dirty over time, the difference after pressure washing will surprise you.

If you are on a tight budget, you aren’t going to invest in expensive landscaping, and if you don’t have a green thumb, the idea of doing it yourself seems daunting. A layer of fresh mulch is a simple and attractive addition that anyone can make look good. Add in low maintenance plants such as ornamental grasses, which are inexpensive and look great against a background of dark mulch, making a real eye-catching impact on your potential buyers as they arrive.

Another easy gardening tip is to add some hardy Honeysuckle bushes along the walkway to your door. They provide great ground cover without needing much care, the peach colored flowers look attractive and the sweet scent adds a subtle appealing touch as people arrive.

Adding large, colored planters on either side of the front door is a simple way to draw the visitors in. Lovely ceramic or terra cotta pots with flowers or plants can be purchased at reasonable prices and provide a symmetrical, visually pleasing focal point. Speaking of that door, how about a coat of fresh paint? Painting the entire house is costly, but making the front door pop with a bright, glossy paint is one of the easiest ways to freshen up your curb appeal. This goes for the garage door as well!

Lastly, get a new welcome mat. It seems like such a small touch, but having a fresh, clean, attractive mat in front of the door as your guests enter is a simple method to ensure they start off on the right foot.
